What type of detector is the Minelab X-TERRA PRO?
The X-TERRA PRO is a conventional VLF detector with selectable single-frequency operation. Minelab calls this system PRO-SWITCH and describes it as a way to adapt the detector to different targets and terrain by choosing between four frequencies.
That description needs qualification. Although the detector has 5, 8, 10 and 15 kHz options across the machine as a whole, those four frequencies are not available within every search mode:
Park: 5, 10 or 15 kHz
Field: 5, 10 or 15 kHz
Beach: 8 kHz
Only one frequency operates at a time. The official Minelab product page says lower frequencies are intended for larger, deeper objects, while higher frequencies offer greater sensitivity to smaller and shallower targets. These are useful principles for selecting a frequency, but they are manufacturer positioning rather than controlled comparative results for this particular detector.
In practice, frequency selection gives the user a meaningful adjustment rather than requiring the same operating frequency everywhere. A lower frequency may be selected when larger or higher-conductive targets are the priority, while 15 kHz provides a higher-frequency inland option. Beach mode handles frequency selection differently by operating at 8 kHz.
The limitation is equally clear: the X-TERRA PRO cannot combine information from several frequencies during one sweep. That separates it from simultaneous multi-frequency detectors, including the alternatives mentioned by contributors to the UK Metal Detecting Forum discussion about the X-TERRA PRO.
This does not make it ineffective. As forum contributor ManOnTheMoon observed:
“Many detectorists have great success with single-frequency detectors, so I am not knocking them.”
It does, however, affect the machine’s position in the market. The X-TERRA PRO provides frequency choice, but it should not be described simply as “multi-frequency” without explaining that it is selectable single-frequency.
What search modes and adjustment options does it provide?

How useful is its Target ID and discrimination system?
The X-TERRA PRO provides a broad Target ID scale with 119 values. Ferrous targets occupy −19 to 0, while non-ferrous values run from 1 to 99.
That figure should not be confused with the number of individually adjustable discrimination segments. The detector has 30 discrimination segments, each covering four Target ID values. A claim that it has 119 independently notched segments would therefore be incorrect.
A broad numerical scale can give the detectorist more descriptive information about a response, but the size of the scale does not prove that target identification will remain stable or accurate at depth. The owner reports demonstrate exactly why numerical resolution and dependable identification are not the same thing.
Spanners found that deep targets could generate high or changing numbers, sometimes around 94–97, while the recovered objects included aluminium cans, iron and occasional copper coins. At 15 kHz with high sensitivity, the machine was described as jittery, producing numerous tones and changing Target ID values.
His conclusion was:
“Kinda learning the numbers are just a guide and the stuff coming through the head phones is still where it’s at.”
A later comment reinforced the difficulty:
“I find the deep signals still tricky to figure.... they seem to show high numbers and range from beer cans, odd bit of iron ...... now and then tho it’s a copper coin.”
These are individual owner observations rather than controlled Target ID tests. They do not establish that every X-TERRA PRO will behave identically on every site. They do show that the large Target ID range should not be treated as a substitute for listening to the response, checking it from different directions and considering the site conditions.

“Most good finds so far have given a clear 2 way response at 90 degrees, anything that's iffy but giving good readings one way could be worth a look too.”

How does the X-TERRA PRO perform on UK pasture and inland sites?

That caveat matters. A comfortable two-hour outing tells us something useful about one owner’s experience, but it cannot settle long-term ergonomics or performance.
Tobyw provided observations from several outings and test-bed use over a couple of months. Recovery speed 3 was used in contaminated ground, with a preference for two-tone audio. Roman bronze coins were recovered and the detector’s build quality was viewed positively.

How waterproof and suitable for wet use is it?

Audio arrangements need separate attention. The detector has a built-in loudspeaker, a 3.5 mm wired-headphone connection and support for compatible low-latency wireless audio. Owners successfully used ordinary wired headphones and Minelab ML85 wireless headphones.
Ordinary headphones and the open 3.5 mm socket should not automatically be treated as part of a waterproof submerged setup. Opening the headphone connection without the appropriate waterproof equipment may compromise waterproofing during submersion.

The supplied V12X 12 × 9-inch Double-D coil provides a substantial standard search area. One owner reported using coils from an Equinox 800, but that individual report is insufficient to claim compatibility with every Equinox coil. How good are the audio options?
Audio appears to be one of the more important aspects of the detector, particularly because owners sometimes found Target ID unstable or ambiguous on deep responses.
The user can choose 1 Tone, 2 Tones, 5 Tones, All Tones or Depth. Volume, target volume, threshold level and Tone 1 volume are adjustable, although threshold pitch is fixed.

The detector supports compatible low-latency wireless audio, and one owner reported that Minelab ML85 headphones worked well. The difficulty is cost and third-party compatibility.

“The thing I don't like is if you want headphones you have to buy Minelabs own (expensive) or run a Bluetooth transmitter (which I've done)”

Spanners found 15 kHz at high sensitivity jittery and difficult to understand. He later preferred Field 1 at 10 kHz with sensitivity between 19 and 21, while manual ground balance reportedly improved the response.

Macsen Wledig originally bought the machine as a low-cost backup. He did not keep it long enough to make a fair overall performance judgement and ultimately preferred a Vanquish at a similar price.

Simultaneous multi-frequency remains the principal comparison point
The strongest recurring reservation is not that the X-TERRA PRO fails to detect. It is that an upgrading user may prefer to put additional money towards simultaneous multi-frequency technology.
