Choosing your first metal detector is mainly a question of matching the machine to the ground you intend to search. A beginner’s guide to metal detectors cannot identify one model that suits everyone: farmland, pasture, woodland and wet salt beaches place different demands on a detector.
The most useful beginner’s machine is therefore not necessarily the cheapest or the one with the most settings. It is one that is comfortable to carry, understandable in use and capable of working reliably where you have permission to detect.

What should you look for when buying a metal detector?
Start with where you will actually use it.
For general inland detecting on pasture or cultivated land, look for a detector with clear audio, dependable target identification and controls that can be learnt without constant reference to the manual. If beaches will form a substantial part of your detecting, pay closer attention to salt-water performance and whether the control unit is fully waterproof.
Consider these practical points:
Total weight and balance, not simply the published weight
Shaft length and adjustment

A machine that feels heavy or poorly balanced in the shop will become more uncomfortable after several hours. Likewise, advanced controls offer little benefit if they make the detector unnecessarily difficult to learn.
Avoid choosing solely on advertised depth. Detection depth depends on the target’s size, orientation and conductivity, as well as soil conditions, coil choice, settings and sweep technique. Manufacturers also have no universal method for expressing depth, so simple comparisons are unreliable.
What features do I need when buying a metal detector?
A capable beginner’s detector does not need every advanced adjustment. It should provide the core functions needed to recognise targets and cope with changing ground.

Automatic ground balance is convenient for beginners because it helps the machine account for naturally occurring minerals in the soil. Manual or tracking ground balance provides more control, but it is not essential for every new detectorist.

What does Target ID mean on a metal detector?
Target ID is the numerical value displayed when the detector receives a signal. It represents the machine’s interpretation of the target’s electrical response; it does not identify the buried object with certainty.
Ferrous objects commonly occupy the lower portion of a detector’s scale, while more conductive non-ferrous objects often appear higher. However, the scales differ between manufacturers and models. A number learnt on one detector may mean something different on another.
Target ID can also be affected by:

Nearby iron or other metal

Different objects can produce similar readings. Aluminium, lead, gold and small pieces of silver may overlap, while corroded iron can sometimes give an apparently non-ferrous response. What is discrimination on a metal detector?
Discrimination allows a detector to reject, suppress or alter its response to selected categories of target. It is commonly used to reduce the response from small iron objects.
Some detectors divide the Target ID scale into segments that can be accepted or rejected. Others provide an adjustable discrimination level or preset search modes.
Heavy discrimination has a cost. A desirable object can give a similar response to rejected rubbish, while iron close to a non-ferrous target can mask the better signal. Rejecting large parts of the scale may make a site quieter, but it can also mean missing finds.
For beginners, modest iron rejection is usually more useful than trying to eliminate every unwanted signal. Listening to iron also helps reveal how much contamination is present and whether a questionable target is mixed with another object.
What difference does coil size make on a metal detector?
Coil size changes ground coverage, target separation, weight and sensitivity. It does not simply determine how deeply the detector will work.
A larger coil covers more ground with each sweep and may improve the response from larger, deeper targets. It suits open fields and beaches where targets are relatively dispersed. Its disadvantages include extra weight and a greater chance of detecting several adjacent objects at once.
A smaller coil covers less ground but can separate closely spaced targets more effectively. It is useful among dense iron, around stubble, between roots and in confined woodland. Smaller coils are also generally easier to position precisely over a target.
A medium-sized coil is the sensible starting point for mixed inland detecting. It offers a compromise between coverage, separation and manageable weight. Before buying an additional coil, confirm that it is compatible with the exact detector model.
What’s the difference between single and multi-frequency?
A single-frequency detector transmits at one operating frequency. Some models allow the user to select between several frequencies, but they still transmit only one at a time.
Frequency influences the detector’s response to different targets. Broadly, lower frequencies tend to favour larger or more conductive objects, while higher frequencies are more responsive to small, low-conductive targets. This is a tendency rather than a guarantee, because detector design and signal processing also affect performance.
Simultaneous multi-frequency detectors process more than one frequency at the same time. Their main attraction is versatility across varied targets and ground conditions. They can be particularly useful on wet salt sand, which presents difficulties for many conventional single-frequency machines.
Multi-frequency is not automatically necessary for every beginner. A well-designed single-frequency detector may be entirely suitable for inland pasture and cultivated soil. If you expect to move regularly between inland permissions and wet beaches, simultaneous multi-frequency deserves greater weight in the decision.
What is recovery speed on a metal detector?
Recovery speed describes how quickly a detector can respond to one target and then recognise the next. It matters most where desirable objects lie close to iron or modern rubbish.
A faster recovery speed can produce two distinguishable responses where a slower setting might merge the targets or allow one to mask the other. This can improve separation on contaminated sites.
There is a trade-off. On detectors with adjustable recovery speed, very high settings can make deeper or weaker signals shorter and harder to hear. A lower setting may produce a fuller response in clean ground but perform less effectively around closely spaced targets.
Begin with the manufacturer’s standard or medium setting. Alter it only after listening to how the detector responds on the site. Recovery speed also works alongside coil size and sweep speed: fitting a small coil and using a controlled sweep can improve separation without relying entirely on an aggressive setting.
Practical guidance before your first search
Before detecting, make sure you have permission from the person or organisation entitled to grant it. Agree how finds will be handled and record the landowner’s permission in writing.

Buying a capable detector matters, but learning its tones and behaviour matters more. Regular practice with one machine is usually more productive than repeatedly changing detectors in search of an instant improvement.
