Nokta Score Review: How Much Detector Do You Get Without the Advanced Controls?

The Nokta Score is a waterproof, simultaneous multi-frequency metal detector designed around simplicity. It combines three search modes, automatic and manual ground balance, four discrimination patterns, noise cancellation and wireless audio, but deliberately leaves out many of the adjustments found on more advanced machines.
That distinction matters. The Score is not simply an inexpensive detector with every possible setting squeezed into its menu. It is intended to provide modern multi-frequency operation without demanding extensive configuration from its user. LP Metal Detecting describes it as easy to use straight out of the box, while Nokta recommends multi-frequency operation across all three search modes.
At the time the Evidence Pack was compiled, LP Metal Detecting listed the Score at £299.95. The current product listing can be viewed through the Nokta Score affiliate link.
UK Detectorist has not owned or tested the Nokta Score. This review examines its documented specifications alongside the limited independent and owner reports currently available.
What is the Nokta Score designed to do?
The Score is intended to cover the main environments encountered by a general-purpose detector: parks, fields and beaches. These are represented by three dedicated search modes rather than one universal operating programme.
According to the Nokta Score user manual, Park and Field modes can operate using one of three simultaneous multi-frequency options, M1, M2 or M3. They can also run at a single frequency of 15 kHz. Beach mode is multi-frequency only.
This gives the Score more flexibility than its deliberately simple interface might initially suggest. A user can choose between search environments, multi-frequency options and single-frequency operation without entering the deeper configuration systems associated with more advanced detectors.
Nokta nevertheless recommends multi-frequency operation in every mode:

The single-frequency option is principally relevant where electromagnetic interference makes multi-frequency operation unstable. Nokta states that 15 kHz may run more quietly in those conditions, although it may be less sensitive to different target types simultaneously.
Nokta Score technical specifications
The specifications below apply to the basic Score rather than the Double Score or Triple Score. Nokta’s manual covers all three models, so features shown elsewhere in the combined documentation should not automatically be attributed to the basic detector.

How does simultaneous multi-frequency work on the Score?
Simultaneous multi-frequency is the defining technical feature of the Score. Instead of transmitting and processing only one operating frequency, the detector can work with multiple frequencies together. Nokta presents this as a way to improve its response across different target types and ground conditions.
The Score provides three multi-frequency selections rather than treating multi-frequency as one fixed option:
M1, M2 and M3 are available in Park and Field.
Beach mode uses simultaneous multi-frequency exclusively.
Park and Field can alternatively use 15 kHz.
Nokta recommends M3 in contaminated Park sites where desirable targets may sit close to aluminium foil.
Nokta describes Park mode as being optimised for modern contaminated urban ground and medium to large coins and jewellery. Field mode is presented as the option for relics and targets in less developed ground. Nokta claims that simultaneous multi-frequency in Field mode provides maximum depth and target separation, although the approved sources contain no controlled test confirming that claim.
Beach mode is intended for dry sand, wet sand and underwater use. Nokta states that simultaneous multi-frequency reduces instability caused by conductive salt and seawater. This is technically plausible manufacturer guidance, but it should not be mistaken for an independently verified UK salt-beach result. No approved source tested the Score under controlled wet-sand or surf conditions.
How much control does the Score provide?
The Score sits in an unusual position. It is intentionally simplified, but it is not devoid of useful adjustment.
Users can alter sensitivity, volume, backlighting and Ground Suppressor. The machine also provides automatic and manual ground balance, automatic noise cancellation and four discrimination patterns. Pinpointing, vibration and an LED torch are built in.
This is enough control to respond to several common problems. Sensitivity can be reduced if the detector is unstable. Noise cancellation can address electromagnetic interference. Ground balance can be used where difficult soil affects stability, while discrimination patterns can suppress broad groups of unwanted responses.
The important limitation is that several controls operate through fixed choices rather than detailed customisation.
The four discrimination patterns are:

These are selectable patterns. They are not an individual-ID notch system through which the user can accept or reject each number on the 01 to 60 scale. Describing the Score as having adjustable discrimination is therefore accurate only if the distinction is maintained.
Tone behaviour is also fixed. Park uses three tones, while Field and Beach use two. The user cannot add tones, move the tone breaks or construct a personal audio arrangement. Beach mode’s tone break is fixed at Target ID 10.
The absence of recovery-speed adjustment may be particularly noticeable to experienced users working among dense iron or closely spaced targets. However, the available sources do not include a controlled recovery or separation test, so it is not possible to quantify what the fixed setting means in UK conditions.
What settings are missing from the basic Score?
The basic Score does not include:

The Triple Score’s Relic mode
These omissions define the machine as much as its included features. An experienced user who routinely adjusts recovery speed, builds detailed notch patterns or interprets targets through customised tones may find the Score restrictive.
Conversely, those omitted controls reduce the amount of configuration required before detecting. LP Metal Detecting describes the machine as usable “without needing lots of advanced settings”. That is retailer positioning rather than a measured performance result, but it accurately reflects the documented control system.
The relevant question is not whether more settings are always better. It is whether the user wants the detector to make certain decisions for them. With the Score, much of the tone structure, recovery behaviour and discrimination arrangement is predetermined.
How does its Target ID and discrimination system operate?
The Nokta Score uses a Target ID range from 01 to 60. The official allocation places ferrous targets between 01 and 10 and non-ferrous targets between 11 and 60.
Its visual ID scale contains 30 segments, meaning each segment represents two Target ID numbers. The display therefore provides both a numerical ID and a broader graphical indication.
The manual cautions that:

That warning should be taken seriously. A Target ID is an interpretation of a signal rather than a material analysis. Small, deep, angled or difficult targets can produce unstable numbers. IDs may jump between values or disappear at the edge of detection.
The standard Park discrimination pattern rejects IDs 01 to 10. Park Custom rejects 01 to 12, as does Field Custom. These preset rejection ranges simplify operation, but they also mean the user must understand what the detector is excluding.
One owner later reported that a metal button produced a response convincing enough to be mistaken for the desired targets:

That does not demonstrate a defect unique to the Score. It illustrates the broader limitation of treating numerical IDs as definitive. Shape, orientation, depth, corrosion and nearby material can all affect a detector’s response, although the supplied evidence does not allow those variables to be examined in this case.
Ground balance, interference and difficult conditions
Nokta states that the Score is designed to operate without ground balancing across most ground. On highly mineralised soil, however, the manufacturer says that ground balancing may improve depth and stability.
Both automatic and manual ground balance are provided. This contradicts one low-confidence review’s vague suggestion that the machine lacks advanced ground-balancing options. The distinction appears to be between having ground balance and having a broader suite of advanced adjustments. The basic Score clearly has automatic and manual ground balance.
Electromagnetic interference is addressed through automatic noise cancellation. The detector evaluates 13 channels and selects one intended to reduce interference. Nokta recommends running noise cancellation before lowering sensitivity.
If interference continues, users can select single-frequency 15 kHz in Park or Field. Nokta says this may provide quieter operation, although the trade-off is reduced simultaneous sensitivity across several kinds of target.
One unidentified writer at UK Metal Detecting claimed that the Score performed strongly in lightly mineralised ground but could “struggle in highly mineralized soil”. That article supplies no named tester, settings, test photographs, measurements or disclosed ground conditions. The observation should therefore be treated as a low-confidence report, not an established performance characteristic.
Is the Nokta Score properly waterproof?
The Score carries an IP68 rating and is specified as fully submersible to 5 metres. The control unit, shaft arrangement and waterproof DD coil are therefore intended for more than protection against rain or an accidental splash.
Nokta describes Beach mode as suitable for dry sand, wet sand and underwater detecting. Its exclusive use of simultaneous multi-frequency is intended to reduce instability on conductive salt and in seawater.
Waterproofing to 5 metres widens the Score’s practical range considerably. It can be used in shallow water and submerged beyond the depth at which most users could comfortably detect without specialist diving equipment.
There are still two separate questions:
Is the detector physically waterproof to the stated depth?
How well does it identify targets in conductive wet salt and seawater?
The specification answers the first question. The approved evidence does not independently answer the second. The low-confidence UK Metal Detecting article says Beach mode reduced wet-sand and salt-water interference, with possible sensitivity loss in highly saline conditions, but it provides no documented test method.
The Score’s beach capability should therefore be described as a substantial documented feature supported by manufacturer claims, not as independently proven UK beach performance.
Coil, shaft, battery and convenience features
The official manual assigns the basic Score an SC30 DD search coil measuring 30 x 23 cm, or 12 x 9 inches. A separate review describes an 11-inch coil, but that conflicts with Nokta’s model-specific specification and should not be used.
The lower shaft is carbon fibre. A verified overall detector weight was not established by the approved sources. One article quotes 1.3 kg, but neither the extracted official specification nor LP Metal Detecting’s listing confirms that figure. It cannot be treated as verified.
Power comes from a rechargeable lithium polymer battery. The supplied accessories listed by LP include a USB charging and data cable. No approved source provides a verified battery-runtime test, so practical endurance over repeated full days remains unknown.
Software can be updated, and the installed version is displayed during start-up. Updateability matters because it gives Nokta a route to issue firmware changes, although no claim should be made about future features or corrections.
Other practical equipment includes:

LP’s package list does not include headphones. Bluetooth capability should not be read as confirmation that wireless headphones are supplied.
What does the estimated depth indicator tell you?
The Score includes a five-level estimated depth indicator. This is an aid to interpreting target distance, not a precise measurement in centimetres.
The available evidence does not establish a controlled maximum detection depth. The UK Metal Detecting article claims coin-sized targets were detected at 20 to 25 cm and larger objects beyond 30 cm, but it gives no target details, settings, soil description, test method or measurements.
Detection depth changes with target size, orientation, conductivity, coil position, ground conditions, electromagnetic interference and settings. Without those details, isolated depth figures create a misleading impression of precision.
The detector’s depth indicator may still be useful for comparing signals within the same session. It should not be treated as a calibrated excavation measurement or proof that a target of a particular type will be detected at a specified depth.
What are detectorists saying?
Published owner and community evidence for the basic Nokta Score is thin. The approved material contains one UK discussion without stated first-hand use and two reports from the same US owner. It does not support a claim of broad community consensus.
The UK view: simplicity divides opinion
One contributor on Metal Detecting Forum UK described the Score as a simplified derivative of the Legend:

That is a useful summary of its position, although it is a community description rather than a technical comparison verified within this Evidence Pack.
The same discussion shows why simplification will not appeal to everyone. Another contributor rejected the Score because its fixed tone arrangement did not suit their preferences:

That contributor incorrectly described how the tones are allocated between modes. The technical explanation should not be repeated, but the underlying objection remains valid: limited tone choice can be enough to rule out a detector for someone who relies on a particular audio system.
This is the central divide around the Score. Its reduced menu is likely to help users who want immediate operation, but the same design removes controls that others consider fundamental.
One owner’s first outing
The only first-hand owner represented in the approved sources initially used the Score for roughly two hours in a park. No settings, measured depths or controlled comparisons were provided.
The owner considered the detector workable but wanted sharper audio and quicker recovery:

This is relevant because neither tone construction nor recovery speed can be adjusted on the basic Score. If the user dislikes those fixed characteristics, there is little scope to alter them through configuration.
The owner nevertheless concluded:

They also expected a learning period before they could select desirable targets consistently. That is worth noting because a simplified interface does not eliminate the need to learn signal behaviour. Fewer settings can make initial operation easier, but target interpretation still develops through repeated use.
Follow-up experience
Ten days later, the same owner reported another session of approximately 90 minutes. They concentrated on a narrow range of high-conductive targets and expressed greater satisfaction:

This progression suggests that their confidence improved after further use. It does not establish a wider trend because both reports come from one person at a limited number of sites.
Their second report also included the metal button that produced a misleading response. This provides a useful counterweight to the positive conclusion: the Score helped the user pursue a selected target range, but its ID system did not prevent an unwanted object from producing a convincing signal.
What can be concluded from the owner material?
Only a few restrained conclusions are justified:
One owner found the machine usable after a short first outing.
The same owner wanted crisper tones and faster recovery.
Their opinion became more positive after another short session.
They still encountered an unwanted target that imitated the desired response.
A UK contributor considered the fixed tone system unsuitable for their preferences.
The community material does not establish representative satisfaction, reliability or performance.
There is no approved owner evidence covering extended use on UK pasture, ploughed fields, stubble, wet salt beaches or heavily iron-contaminated archaeological ground. There is also no long-term report covering battery degradation, shaft wear, coil durability or waterproof reliability.
How credible are the published performance claims?
The weakest part of the available material is independent performance testing.
The UK Metal Detecting article describes good separation, a simple interface, strong depth in lightly mineralised ground and reduced performance in heavily mineralised soil. It also gives specific depth figures. However, it does not identify the tester or disclose settings, ground conditions, targets, photographs, measurements or comparison machines.
Several of its specifications conflict directly with Nokta’s manual. It incorrectly describes:

Notch discrimination where the basic Score uses fixed patterns

These errors materially reduce confidence in its other unsupported claims. Its observations can be reported as attributed impressions, but they cannot establish measured depth, separation or difficult-ground performance.
No approved source provides:
A controlled comparison with similarly priced detectors
A reliable measured depth test
A controlled recovery-speed test
A documented target-separation test
A verified UK wet-salt-beach test
A battery-runtime test
A long-term durability assessment
This does not demonstrate poor performance. It means the Score’s real-world ability has not been established adequately within the published material approved for this review.
Where are the Score’s principal strengths?
Straightforward operation
Simplicity is the most consistently supported strength. Nokta’s fixed tone arrangements and discrimination patterns, LP’s beginner positioning and UK community descriptions all point towards a detector intended to minimise menu work.
Simultaneous multi-frequency
The provision of M1, M2 and M3 across Park and Field, with dedicated multi-frequency operation in Beach mode, gives the Score a more substantial frequency system than its simple controls might imply.
Useful core adjustments
Despite its reduced complexity, the detector retains automatic and manual ground balance, sensitivity control, 13-channel noise cancellation, Ground Suppressor, discrimination patterns and pinpointing.
Waterproof construction
Its IP68 rating and 5-metre submersion specification make it suitable for detecting in rain, shallow water and submerged environments within the rated limit.
Integrated convenience features
A rechargeable battery, Bluetooth audio, vibration alert, backlight, LED torch, updateable software and carbon-fibre lower shaft create a well-equipped basic package.
Clear product identity
The Score does not pretend to be the most configurable model in Nokta’s range. Its reduced control set is intentional and relatively easy to understand before purchase.
What are its principal weaknesses?
Fixed recovery behaviour
Recovery speed cannot be adjusted. One owner specifically wanted a faster response, but there is no controlled evidence showing how the fixed speed performs among closely spaced targets.
Limited audio configuration
Tone counts and tone breaks are fixed. One UK contributor considered this sufficient reason to reject the detector.
Restricted discrimination control
The user selects broad discrimination patterns rather than constructing a detailed programme for individual Target IDs.
No saved profiles
Settings cannot be stored as separate user profiles for different sites or search purposes.
Limited advanced controls
Iron volume, threshold, bottle-cap rejection and several other adjustments are absent from the basic Score.
Weak independent testing
Published performance evidence is insufficient to verify depth, separation, wet-salt handling, mineralised-ground performance or long-term reliability.
Thin owner evidence
The approved first-hand reports represent one person across two short outings. They cannot indicate general owner satisfaction.
Who is the Nokta Score intended for?
The Score’s documented design is most closely aligned with someone who wants simultaneous multi-frequency operation without a large menu of technical adjustments.
That may include:
A newcomer who wants a detector that can cover fields, parks and beaches
A user moving beyond a basic single-frequency machine
Someone who values waterproofing and convenience features over extensive customisation
A detectorist who prefers fixed programmes and limited set-up
A user who does not require personalised tones, recovery settings or detailed notch patterns
It is less clearly aligned with experienced users who select machines according to audio flexibility, recovery-speed control, iron handling or the ability to create precise discrimination programmes.
The Score should not be described as suitable only for beginners. Its core technology and waterproofing may appeal more broadly. However, its fixed controls are likely to determine whether an experienced detectorist considers it refreshingly direct or unnecessarily restrictive.
Overall Impression
The Nokta Score combines a substantial core specification with a deliberately reduced control system. It offers three search modes, M1, M2 and M3 simultaneous multi-frequency operation, optional 15 kHz use in Park and Field, automatic and manual ground balance, 13-channel noise cancellation, four discrimination patterns and full submersion to 5 metres.
Its rechargeable battery, Bluetooth audio, vibration, backlight, LED torch, carbon-fibre lower shaft and updateable software add practical value. The machine is not stripped down in the sense of lacking modern equipment. It is stripped down in how much control it gives the user over recovery, tones and discrimination.
That creates a clear trade-off. The fixed interface reduces set-up and supports the Score’s switch-on-and-go positioning, but it also removes several tools experienced users employ to adapt a detector to difficult or crowded ground. Published community comments reflect both sides: one owner became increasingly positive over two short sessions, while another contributor dismissed the machine because its tone options did not suit them.
The main uncertainty is performance evidence. Nokta’s documentation establishes what the detector contains, but there is no strong independent UK test verifying depth, recovery, separation, salt-beach behaviour or performance on typical farmland. Existing performance claims either come from the manufacturer or from a low-confidence article with undisclosed methods and conflicting specifications.
The Nokta Score at LP Metal Detecting is therefore best understood as a waterproof simultaneous multi-frequency detector built around fixed, accessible operation, with its principal limitations arising from the same simplified design.
